Abaco's Famous Underwater Home

Over the years, thousands of visitors have fallen in love with Abaco, drawn by the natural beauty and wonders of these sun soaked islands.
Many of them have ended up buying Abaco real estate, settling here either full time or as second home owners and becoming part of our communities.
The fishing, diving, beaches and sailing grounds have all played Pied Piper, but there are also land attractions in Abaco that have wooed many a local and visitor.
One of those attractions, a blue hole in Abaco, will be featured in a Nova/National Geographic special about blue holes in the Bahamas. The first 1-hour documentary film, entitled Extreme Cave Diving, airs February 9th at 8pm (Nova on PBS).
A team of scientists, divers and film crews have spent about a year working on the documentary of blue holes in the Bahamas. It promises to highlight groundbreaking scientific work that’s been conducted over the past 5 years.
The blue hole in Abaco is known as Sawmill Sink. It’s filled with salt water and is located in the pine barrens of Great Abaco.
The blue hole played home to pre-historic creatures that took up residence in the mysterious underwater rooms.
Sawmill Sink contains evidence up to 4,000 years old and allows the imagination to take flight with images of crocodiles, giant tortoises, strange birds and bats.
According to Dr. Kenneth Broad of the Rosensteil School of Marine Sciences: “There is no place like it in the world for blue holes.”
Sawmill Sink was discovered by Brian Kakuk, a former Navy diver and marine scientist
Leading a dive in a cave near a blue hole south of Marsh Harbour, Abaco, in 2004, he found a giant turtle shell carbon-dated to be about 2,500 years old.
According to published reports, a perfectly preserved 1,040-year old human bone was discovered.
For Abaco, the documentary promises a fascinating look into the past.
